Program Overview
The establishment of this new RAP is a result of a collaborative endeavor supported by a 2022 Scale Up Grant from the state of Colorado. Over the past 18 months, a coalition of dedicated partners, including local experts and educational institutions, have worked in unison to design a comprehensive training program. This program is meticulously crafted to align with the ever-evolving requirements of the farming industry. The program is on track to place its first two apprentices by the end of December 2023, with training and work commencing in March 2025. Program Tracks and Training
Mountain Roots Food Project has played a crucial role in designing the apprenticeship and will serve as the sponsor agency and AmeriCorps Program grantee. The RAP focuses on two primary tracks: regenerative agriculture and hydroponic farming. Each apprentice will be granted a minimum of 2,000 hours of on-the-job training, complemented by 144 hours of related instruction. Local, experienced farmers will offer hands-on training, providing apprentices with practical knowledge and skills. Additionally, apprentices will have the opportunity to attend conferences, expanding their networks and enhancing their skill sets beyond farming.
For instance, during on-the-job training, apprentices will learn about soil health management, crop rotation techniques, and the use of natural fertilizers in regenerative agriculture. In hydroponic farming, they will explore the intricacies of growing plants in nutrient-rich water solutions and the benefits of controlled environments. These immersive experiences will equip apprentices with a diverse set of skills that are essential in the modern agricultural industry.
